My Definition of Yin Yoga
In today’s episode, I go over the definition of Yin Yoga. Despite its popularity, this is a practice that’s not always easy to describe. And, since there are some misconceptions out there about Yin Yoga, it’s worth taking the time to break this down!
Episode Details:
In this episode I will take you through my detailed definition of Yin Yoga, which I have (painstakingly) crafted over years of practice and teaching. This definition represents a mindful, therapeutic approach to Yin Yoga, and it is what I use in my Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings. As you’ll hear, this definition covers several important aspects of the Yin style of practice.
My definition of Yin Yoga includes:
- that Yin Yoga is a first and foremost a meditative practice
- how we hold Yin Yoga poses for several minutes at a time
- that Yin poses are practiced passively, without muscle engagement
- how the gradual Yin stretches relate to moving Qi (Chi) through the connective tissues
- how Yin Yoga affects the nervous system
- and how it teaches us interoceptive awareness, or mindfulness in the body
There’s a lot to unpack in here, so listen in for some nuances and insights about the Yin Yoga practice – including some differences between Yin and Restorative, and the affirmation that yes, we DO use props (like blankets, blocks, and bolsters) in Yin Yoga.
This episode may help you decide if the Yin style is something you resonate with and want to explore more deeply. And, the next time someone asks you what Yin Yoga is, you’ll be ready with a well-thought out answer!
