Ease In To Meditation: A Movement-Based Mindfulness Course

A new twist on the typical “meditation for beginners” course!

This is an 8-week Intro-to-Mindfulness course, where you will learn the basic principles and techniques of Mindfulness Meditation…but in movement FIRST.

Why? Because conscious movement is a wonderful, embodied method for learning mindfulness skills. And, it’s often a more practical starting point than long sessions of sitting in stillness.

Meditation isn’t necessarily easy…but it also doesn’t have to be a struggle.

Oftentimes, when you try to start a meditation practice and go right into silence and stillness, it’s a little too abrupt. You end up just sitting there feeling fidgety and wondering if you’re doing something wrong. The thing is, many of us need to make a more gradual transition from our hectic daily routines into meditation, so it doesn’t feel like trying to suddenly slam on the brakes.

Movement can help us make that transition, release unnecessary tension, and shift the nervous system into a state of balance that supports meditation. When done with conscious intention, movement can simply be another form of meditation – embodying the same principles that form the basis of traditional sitting practices.

By practicing along with this course, you will get familiar with mindfulness skills in movement, explore traditional meditations with greater ease and confidence, and learn to fit mindfulness breaks into your day.

P.S. Sitting on the ground is not required (or even recommended!)…we’ll explore a variety of meditation postures.

A movement-based mindfulness course might be for you if:

  • You tend to feel too restless or anxious for sitting meditation
  • You feel like you never have time to slow down and meditate
  • Tension, aches, and pains have held you back from meditating
  • You’re a kinesthetic learner who likes to explore new ideas by doing

A Practical Approach Increases the Benefits

Mindfulness can help you grow more resilient to stress, become less reactive, feel more balanced in your emotions, sleep better, improve focus and memory, and be more present with others. You can literally change your brain with consistent practice, quieting mechanisms of fear and worry, while growing areas of the brain related to compassion and connection.

However, meditation is not a “quick fix” strategy (also, you don’t need to be fixed!). It is a life-enriching, life-long exploration that helps us meet ourselves just as we are. You will see benefits from the practice, (maybe even quickly!), but the more consistent you are, the better it works. That means your practice needs to be realistic for you, and you need to enjoy it enough to keep coming back.

Movement and Mindfulness: More Powerful Together!

When you combine movement and mindfulness, you also gain some extra benefits for the body, brain, and nervous system – these practices are more powerful together!

(If you want to know more about the benefits of Mindful Movement, check out this podcast episode…)

The Mindful Movement practices in this course will be drawn from Qigong, Gentle Yoga, and Somatics, because each of these styles has something unique to offer our body-mind exploration.

You do not need to be especially fit or nimble to keep up – these movements will be very approachable and adaptable. The intention behind Mindful Movement is more about getting you out of your head and into your body (rather than impressing anyone with your photo-worthy acrobatics).

How does this 8-week course work?

This course is designed to help you ease in to meditation, with support, and at your own pace. You can practice along with us each week, at whatever time is best for you.

During the course, you’ll receive an email each Sunday walking you through the video lessons and practices of the week. These emails are a supplement to the videos, providing extra context, encouragement, and reflection prompts to deepen your studies.

Each week’s videos will include:

  • a Short Mindfulness lesson (5-10 mins), explaining the theme of the week
  • a Mindful Movement + Meditation Practice (30-40 mins), putting the lesson into action
  • Bonus “reset” practices and guided meditations

There will be a live Zoom Q&A and group check-in session with Addie at the mid-point of the course. And, you can also email me with your questions at any point during the eight weeks, and I will send you a personal response (via email or a short video message).

All of the videos and course materials will be yours to keep forever, so no pressure to push through it or “get it” all at once.

Are you ready to learn mindfulness through movement? When you understand what it actually feels like to be present, and you have an idea of what meditation focal points and postures work best for you, you can actually start to gain traction in your practice. Let’s get started!
